The Secret To Overcoming Obstacles

ree

After our #SwagAndRepeat podcast interview today, our guest decided to share a story on the importance of perseverance. She explained how in her early 20's she wanted a job that was highly sought after but when she interviewed she was told that others had more experience and better skillsets.

So what did she do?

She called back every single Tuesday for four and a half months straight, being genuinely interested in the conversations she was having, and ultimately landed the position.

That's grit.

That's the definition of perseverance -- a continued effort to achieve something despite difficulties, failure, or opposition.

I realize times may be different now in the application to employment realm but think about how many people are simply applying online and giving up at that point thinking they've done all that they could.

I'll share another example: I applied to be President-Elect for MPI Orlando four different times before I was slated. I could have given up that first time... or second... or third, but I kept learning, growing and applying. What kept me going was a long-term goal. What I did to stand out was join international task forces, be nominated for two International RISE Awards, show up to every chapter event and board meeting possible, collaborate on new initiatives, volunteer, speak, sponsor, network... and not give up.

Looking back at the past 18 months, we have all faced challenges during unprecedented times. Whether it's a major event that did not happen the way you'd originally planned, domestic or international trips that couldn't occur or a recurring feeling of uncertainty, fear, or guilt - obstacles were overcome.

So what's the secret?

Having long-term goals.

Perseverance teaches you to continue working towards something until you succeed. It allows you to not lose focus and continue past the hurdles.

That final goal you set can be broken down into smaller achievements. And those achievements should be celebrated along your journey.
